With three collections so far at the Stadium of Light, over £2,000 raised and 1.8 tonnes of food donated, its safe to say that Sunderland fans not only support their team but also their local foodbank!
Once again, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of people who were keen to hear about what we were doing. It was so encouraging to see the way people wanted to know what difficulties people in their local community are going through – and how they could play a part in supporting them.
The foodbank will be collecting regularly at home games in conjunction with Red and White Army (RAWA) – independent fan club on Sunderland AFC – as well as the Foundation of Light, County Durham foodbank (Sunderland’s sister foodbank) and the SAFC club.
Both RAWA and Sunderland foodbank recently attended the Fans Supporting Foodbanks Conference in Liverpool which brought together supporters from all over the country. This initiative is one which many clubs are now getting involved with, linking them with foodbanks who provide vital support for local people.
Partnerships like this can makes a huge difference to those who are struggling.
Enthusiasm and generosity marked the collection days as the foodbank collected food, toiletries and cash to support their efforts in helping people in Sunderland and County Durham. Our volunteers thoroughly enjoy collection days at the Stadium of Light, and we hope to continue to build on the success achieved so far.
Our next collections will be on 16th March and 13th April in the fanzone – we hope to see you there!
